Asiah Kudi, a 20-month-old baby girl, died in December 2019 after her mother, Verphy Kudi, left her home alone in their Brighton flat to celebrate her 18th birthday with friends. When Verphy returned five days, 21 hours and 58 minutes later, she found Asiah dead in her cot.

Asiah's grandmother, Asia Batrane, who didn't know her granddaughter was being left alone, broke down in tears during the inquest as she recalled the tragedy. The inquest also revealed that Verphy had left Asiah alone in the flat at least a dozen times. Verphy was jailed for nine years in August 2021, and the inquest is ongoing.
