A couple with two children escaped the rat race by selling their three-bed semi in Manchester for £400,000 and buying an entire French village in the region of Poitou-Charentes, south west France. Liz and David Murphy purchased Luc De Maison, a historic rural hamlet, in January 2021, which includes six 400-year-old houses, two barns, and three acres of land, along with two 10m x 15m swimming pools.
The couple spent £300,000 renovating the properties, turning four of them into holiday homes they plan to rent out for hundreds of pounds a week. They say they now live like millionaires, despite not speaking French, and have no plans to return to the UK.
