A man escaped the New Zealand mosque shooting only to discover his wife had been killed outside. He had been praying at the Masjid Al Noor mosque when a gunman entered and opened fire, killing 30 people. Another shooting took place at the Linwood Masjid Mosque, leaving 10 people dead.
At least nine others were also killed in the massacres. The husband, who did not want to be named, found his wife's body after escaping the attack. Four people have been taken into custody over the attacks, which the prime minister of Australia has described as the work of an "extremist right-wing violent terrorist".
