An overpass on Interstate 95 in Philadelphia collapsed after a massive tanker fire below. The fire broke out on Sunday morning, between Academy Road and Cottoman Avenue, in the Tacony section of north Philadelphia. Smoke was seen from miles away and the northbound side of the bridge collapsed while the southbound was compromised.
The road will be closed for weeks as officials work to repair the overpass and clean up the estimated 8,500 gallons of leaked gasoline, some of which spilled into the Delaware River. The support structures for the bridge were made of steel and therefore susceptible to the heat of the fire.
There is no word on reported injuries yet.
